This fantastic novel, by Lawrence Yep, springs to life as Casey, at age 12, is sneaked in the hospital where her dad is kept "hostage". Her dad tried to gamble his and her daughter's way to victory, and does, but is attacked and sent to where he is now. Now, because of this Casey has to go to live with her grandmother named Paw-Paw. Casey is always felling lost, whether in the streets or in school, Casey fells one step behind everybody else. Then Paw-Paw tells Casey about her mother, and an ancient legend. The story tells about how Casey and Paw-Paw's family's are "children of the owl". Then, Someone sends Paw-Paw reeling into the hospital and steals the owl charm. Who did it?
